The ancient Tamils had good knowledge of astronomy as seen in the over 2000 years old sangam porms.For example,The Tamils were aware that the sun was in the center, and that the planets went around it.Sirupanatrupadai 242 – 243- [சிறுபாணாற்றுப்படை] has a description of the sun being in the center,and surrounded by planets as below: –
"வாள் நிற விசும்பின் கோள்மீன் சூழ்ந்த
இளங்கதிர் ஞாயிறு எள்ளூம் தோற்றத்து
விளங்கு பொற்கலத்தில் விரும்புவன பேணி
ஆனா விருப்பின் தான் நின்று ஊட்டி" (242-245)
"He himself will serve you
unlimited quantities of
desired foods with hospitality
in golden bowls that shine in
a manner that blames the blazing,
tender-rayed sun
surrounded by planets, in the
shining, sword-colored, bright sky."
and this means ‘in the bright sky, like teasing the sun with faint rays that is surrounded by planets’. This book is from the 100 BC – 100 AD.Saint Manikkavachagar describes the creation of the universe, in his 3rd Thiruvachagam ('sacred utterance'/Between 7th to 11th century A.D.) poem in its first four lines as:-
"அண்டப் பகுதியின் உண்டைப் பிறக்கம்
அளப்பு அரும் தன்மை வளப் பெருங் காட்சி
ஒன்றனுக்கு ஒன்று நின்றெழில் பகரின்
நூற்று ஒரு கோடியின் மேல்பட விரிந்தன"
"The origin of the universal sphere,
composed of its (various) elements,
its immeasurable nature,
its vast and rich array of visible forms --
if one were to describe the beauty
of how these appear in manfiestation,
each connected one to the other,
(one would find) that they expand
in a thousand million and more."
1.ANDHA PAGUTHIYL UNDAI PERAKAM/அண்டப் பகுதியின் உண்டைப் பிறக்கம்
Means:In this vast universe there a birth of globe /spherical bodies
2.ALAPERUM THANMAI VALAPERUM KATCHI/அளப்பு அரும் தன்மை வளப் பெருங் காட்சி
Means:We can’t measure it and is impossible to describe their beauty.
3.ONRANUKU ONRU NINRU EALIL PAGARIN/ஒன்றனுக்கு ஒன்று நின்றெழில் பகரின்
Means:In this universe there are so many planets, every planet has its own unique characteristics and excels each other in one way or another.
4.NOOTRU ORU KODIYIN MELPADA VIRINTHA/நூற்று ஒரு கோடியின் மேல்பட விரிந
Means: there are more than 101 crores expanding all the while!
When the Catholic church was burning people at stake for not believing in Geocentric theory (till 16th Century), Tamils were comparing Solar system on a contextual basis implying that Tamils had already known that the system supported Heliocentric theory.Reference to Earth as "அண்டம்" (denotes Spherical shape), and as உலகம் (denotes moving action of the Earth உலவுதல்) shows our advancements in Astronomy.In fact, the most convincing of it is the references of the astronomical events. The reference to 'veLLi ezhundhu viyaazham uRangitru'/”வெள்ளி எழுந்து வியாழம் உறங்கிற்று"[ Venus rose as Jupiter set!] in Thiruppavai betrays the fact that Tamils know their astronomy atleast 1200-1300 years back. Thiruvachagam is full of visionary experience, divine love and urgent striving for truth and even long before, Darwin, Mannikavasagar outlines how human being evolved as:"புல்லாகிப் பூடாய்ப் புழுவாய் மரமாகிப் பல்விருக மாகிப் பறவையாய்ப் பாம்பாகிக் கல்லாய் மனிதராய்ப் பேயாய்க் கணங்களாய் வல்லசுர ராகி முனிவராய்த் தேவராய்ச் செல்லாஅ நின்றஇத் தாவர சங்கமத்துள் எல்லாப் பிறப்பும் பிறந்திளைத்தேன்..."/O our God !Grass,herb,worm, tree,beasts a good many,bird,snake,stone,men,ghouls,bootha-host,cruel Asuras,sages and Devas I was born as all these fauna and flora,...."
Also,It is interesting to note purananuru 30,which speaks about sun and others as below:
"The path of the red sun, its movement, the spheres
around the movement, directions of changing winds,
and existing empty spaces without evidence – all
these are known to intelligent people who can
explain them. Yet the knowledge that knows all this
is unable to know you, since your strength is hidden
like a stone missile hidden in the cheek of an elephant."
"செஞ்ஞாயிற்றுச் செலவும்
அஞ்ஞாயிற்றுப் பரிப்பும்
பரிப்புச் சூழ்ந்த மண்டிலமும்
வளி திரிதரு திசையும்
வறிது நிலைஇய காயமும் என்றிவை
சென்றளந்து அறிந்தார் போல என்றும்
இனைத்து என்போரும் உளரே அனைத்தும்
அறிவு அறிவாகச் செறிவினையாகிக்
களிறு கவுள் அடுத்த எறி கல் போல
ஒளித்த துப்பினை........"
